Championship Flight Set in Philadelphia Women’s Amateur

The field of 16 is set for the championship flight of the 119th Philadelphia Women’s Amateur championship. Defending champion Susie Spotleson will be in the number-one position when match play gets underway Tuesday morning at the Union League Golf Club at Torresdale.
Alex Liu earned medalist honors on Monday with a 3-over par 73. Liu, who plays out of Commonswealth National and who won this championship in 2012, was one of just six players in the field to officially post a sub-80 round (Spotleson’s qualifying score was not available).
Cara Basso was next with a five-over par 75, Kate Evanko was at 76, and Catherine Elliott, Ashley Cassidy, and Sammie Staudt were all at 78.
The layout was listed at 5,790 yards on the scorecard. The putting surfaces proved to be the most strenuous portion of Monday’s examination.
“I thought the greens were what’s gave me the most trouble today,” Basso said. “I finished with two bogeys; I had two birdies so I was hoping for a little bit better finish. But the greens were just giving me trouble all days Once you get in that four-to-six-foot range it’s kind of ‘How much is it going to break?’ And how are you going to hit it so it stays close to the hole?”
In addition to the championship flight, 16 additional players were slotted into the first flight.

Match play will conclude with championship matches in both flights on Friday.
Monday’s qualifying scores will also be factored into the Silver Cross competition, which incorporates the qualifying round for this championship along with the 36 holes of the Farnum Cup, The Women’s Golf Association of Philadelphia’s medal play championship, which is scheduled for next month.

The Philadelphia Women’s Amateur was first contested in in 1897. It is believed to be the nation’s oldest regional  golf championship for women.
