Daniel Campbell put on an impressive display of fencing on Sunday to win the Epee Ironman event hosted by the Bucks County Academy of Fencing. The 15-year old Campbell, fencing out of the Fencing Sport Academy in Fairfax, Virginia, won 15 of his 16 bouts to best a field of 32 competitors from four states.
Campbell started his day by winning 10 of his 11 bouts over two rounds of pool competition with a touches scored/touches received ratio of 58-31. He went on from there to win five direct-elimination bouts before defeating Aimon Flaherty of the Fencing Academy of Philadelphia 15-12 in the final.
Campbell, who came into the competition with a “B” rating, started fencing five years ago and his passion has only grown since then.
“I absolutely love it,” he said. “If I could, I’d be fencing all the time.”
Campbell scored the first four points in the championship final and led 8-1 after the first period. The margin was 12-5 after the second frame before Flaherty rallied in the final period. He closed to within two at 14-12 before Campbell scored the decisive touch.
